For two thousand years Christians have puzzled over the mystery of the Star of Bethlehem, mentioned only in the Gospel of Matthew and seen only by “Magi” arriving unexpectedly in Jerusalem with a startling question: “Where is he that is born King of the Jews?” Contemporary scholars believe the Magi were respected Persian astrologers – advisors to royalty – who recognized a truly magnificent astrological portent. While the Star may have been a myth or miracle, we will attempt to unravel its mystery from the astrological and astronomical perspective of a “Wise Man” alive at the time of Jesus’ birth. Additionally, the unfolding story of the nativity will be connected to Jung’s notion of synchronicity and the archetypes.
“The starry vault of heaven is in truth the open book of cosmic projection, in which are reflected the archetypes. In this vision, astrology and alchemy are the two classical functionaries of the psychology of the collective unconscious.” – C.G. Jung
